Shopping on the Island of Curacao

It's stated that there is first class shopping on the island of Curacao! You'll find high quality products within the stores from around the globe where you can purchase anything from clothing and jewelry to souvenirs.

Shopping in the Local Market

The primary commercial center is Punda in Willemstad Curacao, this is ideal for a little retail therapy with top brands being offered like Gucci, Prada and Dior, you'll be spoilt for choice. There are a huge variety of designer fragrances by Givenchy, Carolina Herrera, Dolce and Gabana and Jean Paul Gaultier to name but a few with smaller shops selling cheaper clothing and electronics. The opening hours of the shop are normally Monday - Saturday 8.30am to 12.00pm and from 2.00pm to 6.00pm. All shops and banks will close on official holiday days however, if a sizable ship docks within the center of Willemstad the majority of the shops within the center will stay open.

One of the Cayman's Specialty Boutiques

Otrobanda is another of the popular Curacao shopping areas and is situated on the other side of St Anna's Bay. The main shopping Street is Breedstraat which is between Kura Hulanda and Rif Fort. Kura Hulanda was restored from its slum state and changed into a beautiful site by the Dutch, some say it's the perfect example of Dutch Architecture.

If you are interested in markets there is a unique little floating market on the Sha in Punda selling local fresh vegetables, fruit and breads. The retailers on the market are Venezuelan and they sit on their motorboats to sell their produce, there is a great buzz on market day and it can get very busy due to its popularity.

The Renaissance Mall and Rif Fort, a Curacao resort, has everything one would need on a day in Curacao shopping. Untold amounts of shops, restaurants and entertainment with over 50 shops that will give any shopper a good deal of choice. There are shops that sell the most recent fashion, accessories and beauty items plus much more with well known brands in addition to unique local items. The area of Rif Fort is very historical as it is a 19th century landmark named as a world heritage site by UNESCO, so while you are shopping you can also take in a bit of culture at the same time.

The main house features 3 large bedrooms and three huge bathrooms, all with whirlpool tubs and separate showers. An 8’ by 20’ second floor balcony provides sweeping views of the sea with a continuing parade of ships entering Curacao’s famous harbor. The cloud covered mountains of Venezuela dot the distant horizon. The large kitchen features a gas “chefs stove” and all modern appliances. The 21’ x 15’ dining area is covered by old, Dutch tiles, sent to the Island as ballast in sailing ships. A large entry- way and living room feature high ceilings and a media room is located just off this foyer. Many extras add a special character to this Dutch “landhuis” style home dating to the 1700’s. The freshwater pool combines a 50’ x 10’ lap pool with a 10’ x 12’ passage under an arched bridge to a 21’ circular “gathering pool” with underwater seating and a fountain. At the end of the lap pool a 14’ x 14’ gazebo, roofed in Dutch tiles, provides shade for lounge chairs or dining. An additional gazebo adds a pleasant retreat next to the sea and palm lined beach area. The 18’ x 17’ pool house contains the mechanical room, a storage room for pool toys, air mattresses, diving equipment and lounge cushions, and a full bath with huge shower, toilet room, sink and dressing area. An outdoor shower provides a convenient facility for removing beach sand from the “little ones.” Attached to the main house by an archway that conceals a gutter used in the past to carry rainwater to the cistern, is a maid’s house. This features a complete kitchen, living room, bath and loft bedroom as well as an additional sleeping area and its own front covered patio. Connected to the main house on the other side by a beautiful arch is the former cistern building, now “his” and “hers” offices. His (if he is a good negotiator) is 20’ x 10’ with track lighting, beautiful artwork and the interesting texture of 300 year old walls. Hidden below a secret floor panel is a similar sized wine cellar or storage area. Hers is 14’ x 10’ with pine flooring, track lighting, artwork and conversation area. Both offices have two-line phone service, broadband Internet connection, ceiling fans and air conditioning. Wireless internet service covers the whole property. A 16’ x 16’ storage area connects the offices to the rear of a centuries old, Spanish fortress style, two story building which sits right on the sea and contains two apartments. Separated from the main house and pool by a planting area and decorative fence, this private apartment complex features a lower two-bedroom apartment with living room, dining area, complete kitchen with pantry and covered patio area, 10 steps from the sea. The upper apartment has the same 600 square foot floor plan but also has a huge loft bedroom area and a 600 square foot deck, covered with a Dutch tile roof that hangs only 30’ from the “always gentle” waves of the southern Caribbean. This two apartment, 5-bedroom complex provides the perfect private location for visiting friends and family or a fantastic revenue generator without disturbing the peace and tranquility of the main house. On the street an additional building provides two apartments for the caretaker and/or rental space for additional income. The entire complex is walled for maximum security and privacy. Sitting on 135’ of beautiful waterfront, the ocean front area has a large, sandy beach area shaded by palms, sea grape and almond trees. Even at the ocean side, landscaping, old stone walls and fencing provide nearly 100% privacy. Despite the privacy, this incredible property is located close to the action. Two blocks from the beautiful Avila Beach Hotel and two minutes by car or a 15-minute stroll to downtown Willemstad with its many dining and shopping opportunities and “old Dutch” buildings designated by UNESCO as a “World Heritage City”. Seven of Curacao’s finest restaurants are within a few minute walk of the property. Curacao combines a foreign flair with a comfortable, friendly atmosphere. Located miles south of the hurricane zone this Dutch Island features temperatures which usually range from the mid to upper 70’s in the evening to the mid to upper 80’s during the day. Trade winds blow virtually year around. While the local language is Papiamentu and Dutch is the language of business documents, English and Spanish are spoken by nearly everyone & the U.S. Dollar is accepted universally. Exceptional medical care is available at the Island’s two hospital and several clinics. Enjoy 360+ days a year of sun and the clear, warm Caribbean waters of this Island paradise.
